The Vhembe Region is named after the impressive mountain range that stretches for some 130 km from west to east through the region. The area incorporates endless expanses of undulating indigenous bush characterised by the remarkable form of the baobab, wonderful wildlife, a profusion of birds and exciting adventure opportunities. The region boasts one of the most varied natural, geological, archaeological and cultural systems in the world and a fascinating history dating back many centuries when the San roamed the veld and left us their artworks on rocks. These were the times when Arabs and Indians sailed their dhows down south and traded beads and ceramics for the gold and ivory of the ancient African kingdoms ensconced in their fortresses at Mapungubwe and Thulamela.

Mapungubwe UNESCO World Heritage Site

Southern Africa is often referred to as the 'Cradle of Humankind', and archeaological sites such as Sterkfontein and Makapans Caves add significant credence to this theory. The Mapungubwe Cultural Landscape is situated on the southern banks of the great Limpopo River.

The Diamond Route

The Diamond Route links eight sites across northern South Africa in a tourism route. It stretches from Namaqualand on the west coast, to Kimberleythen northeast towards to the Venetia Limpopo reserve.

Lake Fundudzi&ThatheVondo Forest

Lake Funduzi is a magical place that is steeped in Venda mythology and legend. It's condition changes season ally, but it is always worth the visit from a cultural perspective.

Kruger National Park

Limpopo Province offers access to the world-renowned Kruger National Park (70% of which is in the Limpopo province) in its eastern region through the Pafuri, Punda Maria, Phalaborwa and Orpen gates.

Louis Trichardt / Makhado

Louis Trichardt is a town situated at the foot of the Soutpansberg mountain range in Limpopo and was developed from the Voortrekker settlement. It is now named Makhado.

The Soutpansberg

The Soutpansberg, South Africa's northernmost mountain range, takes its name from the salt pans that lie at its base near the western end. These pans have supplied communities with salt from prehistoric times to today.

Africa's Big Five

The Big Five occur in many of the game and nature reserves in Limpopo. Buffalo are the most abundant of the Big Five and occur in large herds that can number up to 600 animals.

Amarula Lapa

Limpopo (Phalaborwa) is also home to the famous Amarula Cream Liqueur. The Amarula Lapa is a promotional tasting and tourist visitor centre situated 10 km outside Phalaborwa. Amarula Cream, made from the fruit of the indigenous marula tree.

Baobab Tree

No tree in Africa embodies the spirit of Africa more than the baobab with its bulbous branches and gnarled bark. Otherwise known as Africa's 'big tree', the baobab is revered in Africa for various reasons.
